Five-Card Draw poker rules

Perhaps the most classic poker form of all and still the game a lot of people think of when they hear the word poker. However, Five-Card Draw is not very popular in the online poker rooms. The object of the game is to create the best possible poker hand out of five personal, hidden cards. There are two betting rounds in Five-Card Draw. These are the Five-Card Draw poker rules:

Antes or blinds – mandatory bets
Five-Card Draw is normally played with antes (mandatory bets made by all players before a hand starts). If blinds are used they are placed by the two players seated to the left of the dealer. If the dealer isn’t playing in the game a dealer button is used to indicate who’s “dealing” (the button is moved one step to the left after each hand is played). The player closest to the dealer (on the left) places the small blind and the player next to him places the big blind. The size of the antes or blinds differs from game to game, but the small blind is normally half the size of the big blind.

The first betting round – five cards are dealt
When the antes (or blinds) are placed five cards are dealt face down to all players at the table. The cards are dealt clockwise, one at a time, and the dealer gets the last one. If the game is played with antes, the player to the left of the dealer acts first, by checking or betting. If blinds are used the player to the left of the big blind acts first, by folding, calling (the amount of the big blind), or raising. The turn to act goes clockwise around the table, and the betting ends with the dealer (when antes are used), or the big blind (when blinds are used). If no one makes a raise the betting round is over. If there has been a raise the remaining players have to respond to this (by folding, calling or re-raising). If a player makes a bet or raise that no one calls he or she wins the pot.

The second betting round – the players trade cards
When the first betting round is over, all the remaining players get the opportunity to trade cards with the deck. Normally you can trade as many cards as you want, by in some variations you can trade a maximum of three cards. When all players have made their trades the player to the left of the dealer opens the betting, if he or she is still in the hand. As in the previous round the betting goes clockwise around the table. When all bets are made the player who was last to bet or make a raise reveals his or hers cards. If another player has a better hand he or she shows the hand. Players with worse hands can either show their cards or muck them. The best five card poker hand takes home the pot.
