Phil was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1972. Phil Laak grew up in Wellesley (Mass). Phil now lives in LA and San Francisco. Phil Laak has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and worked as an engineer, a repo man, real estate investor and a stock market day trader prior to getting into open poker games in California.

Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak are good friends with Antonio actually introducing Phil to the game. Phil and Antonio still travel together when they go on tour.

Phil Laak has won the World Poker Tour (WPT) Invitational in February 2004. He also made two other WPT final tables since - 6th place in both the season 2 Battle of Champions and the 2005 Five Diamond World Poker Classic. Phil also acted as a host and dealer for the E! entertainment network's Hollywood Hold'em program.

At the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Phil Laak finished second to Johnny Chan in the $2,500 pot limit hold 'em event.

Phil Laak also won the William Hill Poker Grand Prix, with a purse worth £150,000.

Phil Laak's total live tournament winnings exceed $950,000 at the end of 2006.

Phil also appeared in the 2nd season of High Stakes Poker on GSN.

Phil "the Unabomber" Laak got his nickname because of the hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses. This makes him look like Theodore Kaczynski who was known as the Unabomber.

Phil likes to hide his face during large hands and is also know as being a little bit unprofessional with his table manners. These same unprofessional manners make him popular with the fans.

He is currently dating Jennifer Tilly who is both a well known actress and poker player.
