Texas Holdem Preflop Strategic Thinking
A week back I listen to Gus Hansen talk about poker and in particular Texas Hold'em.
He got me thinking about poker again.
The most interesting he talked about was preflop strategies. He rightly pointed out that pre-flop people only see 2 cards and this only constitutes under 30% of your hand since there are another 5 cards on the table still to be dealt.
So what Gus advocates is seeing more flops as he says post flop you can make a judgement on your hand with 70% of your hand.
This is a very new way at looking at Texas Hold'em for many folk as it goes against traditional thinking that preflop play is more fundamental in choosing hands.
Now obviously this is not all there is as to playing poker but it is a fundamentally different style from what most players currently play. This could be the anti-Christ of starting hands strategy where most books and pro's advocate only playing strong hands preflop.
This strategy may not work for all players though as playing good poker is not that simple but it could be something to think about if you find that your being outdrawn on the flop. This is just one of the reasons that makes Gus Hansen's playing style so dangerous.
The other big thing to consider is whether your playing tournaments or ring games with different strategies needing to be applied in order to be successful.
I hope this gives you something to think about next time you are playing texas holdem and maybe you too can change your game up occassionally to keep the tight players on their toes.
