Poker Tournament Etiquette
Look by no stroke of the imagination am I a professional poker player but I have played in a number of poker tournaments and there is a way to behave. Sometimes laughing at a person can be funny, but honestly it is not acceptable to be rude to the opposition and step out of line with swear words or other socially unacceptable behavior. The poker realm is meant to be played by gentlemen and woman who understands that losing is part of the game in the same way as winning. It’s just a pity that you lose on the odd occasion and no one is perfect believing me.
Probably the most important thing about poker tournament etiquette is to be polite at all times and take the game on its merits and be gracious in winning as well as defeat. Many street style poker players don’t do very well at being gracious and prefer to come out guns blazing. My contention is that people who can remain calm and play the numbers will in the end overcome the overly aggressive players who don’t keep their temper in check.
Very often new poker players will be overly aggressive in their poker playing style and may initially win their medium to long term game will suffer as averages play themselves out.
When arriving at a poker table tournament situation it is appropriate to greet your fellow contenders. Poker isn’t about yelling and screaming when you win a hand like some of the younger contenders at the WSOP. Yes it’s exciting but it’s about being level headed and understanding the ups and downs.
Poker etiquette is going through some turbulent times with the large influx of new players that don’t have formal training or mentoring. If you don’t know how to hold your cool then stick to the online circuit where you can run around the room screaming at the top of your lungs and swearing profusely, just try to keep it off the online chat.
Poker is a great game and it would be a real pity if the game suffered due to people not being aware of the finer points of the game.
