Seven Card Stud Poker Guide

Seven-Card Stud poker rules

Seven-Card Stud used to be the most played poker game, but has been surpassed by Texas Hold’em in recent years. However, Seven-Card Stud is still very popular, especially in the U.S. The object of the game is to make the best five card poker hand out of three hidden and four open cards (all cards in this game are personal, no community cards are used). There are five betting rounds in Seven-Card Stud. These are the Seven-Card Stud poker rules:

Antes – mandatory bets
Before the game starts the antes have to be placed on the table. The antes are mandatory bets made by all players in the game. The size of the antes differs from game to game.

Third Street – three cards dealt (two hidden, one open)
When the antes are placed three cards are dealt to each player, clockwise, and one at a time. The first two cards are placed face down, and the last one is placed face up. The player with the lowest ranking open card is forced to open the betting with a “bring-in” bet. After that the betting goes clockwise around the table and the other players can fold, call (the amount of the “bring-in”) or raise. If no one makes a raise the betting round is over. If there has been a raise the remaining players have to respond to this (by folding, calling or re-raising). If a player makes a bet or raise that no one calls he or she wins the pot.

Fourth Street – the fourth card is dealt (open)
When the first betting round is finished another face up card is dealt to the remaining players. In this round the player with the highest ranking face up cards opens the betting. Otherwise the betting follows the same procedure as on Third Street.

Fifth Street – the fifth card is dealt (open)
When the second betting round is finished another face up card is dealt to the remaining players. The betting in this round follows the same procedure as on Fourth Street.

Sixth Street – the sixth card is dealt (open)
When the third betting round is finished another face up card is dealt to the remaining players. The betting in this round follows the same procedure as on Fourth and Fifth Street.

Seventh Street – the seventh card is dealt (hidden)
When the fourth betting round is finished another face down card is dealt to the remaining players. The betting in this, the fifth, round follows the same procedure as on Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Street. When all bets are made the player who was last to bet or make a raise reveals his or hers cards. If another player has a better hand he or she shows the hand. Players with worse hands can either show their cards or muck them. The best five card poker hand takes home the pot.
